The Vacheron Constantin Overseas 47040 is the second-generation Overseas: broader and more assertive than the original, with a Maltese-cross bezel echoed in the bracelet’s sculpted links. It’s the version to seek if you prefer a solid caseback and a clean, three-hand dial to the display back and interchangeable strap system of the later generation.

Introduced in 2004, this generation gave the Overseas much of the visual character it retains today. The bracelet deserves particular attention: its alternating surfaces catch the light beautifully, but its fit is less readily adjustable than that of its successor, so the clasp’s available adjustment matters on the wrist. Inside, the automatic 1126 SC belongs to the Jaeger-LeCoultre-derived movement family, protected by a soft-iron inner shield against magnetism. Turn the watch over and the engraved sailing ship supplies a quieter detail than anything on the dial.

What owners love

  • The bracelet is a big part of why owners keep this one: the Maltese-cross-shaped links give it a distinctive look, but they also articulate well and feel comfortable on the wrist.
  • The textured dial rewards a closer look without making the watch fussy to read. Owners particularly enjoy how the dial, polished bezel edges and brushed surfaces change character as the light moves.
  • It feels substantial without being especially thick. That relatively slim profile makes it easier to wear under a cuff than its broad, sporty appearance suggests.

Common Criticisms

  • The clasp lacks a convenient micro-adjustment, so getting the bracelet comfortable can take some fiddling with links. There is no easy way to loosen it a little when your wrist swells during the day.
  • The 42mm case wears broad, especially with the bracelet’s end links extending its footprint. Owners with smaller wrists sometimes find that the slimness does not compensate for how much wrist it occupies.
