The Overseas Chronograph 49150 is the second-generation Overseas at its most distinctive: a broad, notched bezel, a big date at twelve, and a bracelet whose links echo the Maltese cross. It has more visual muscle than the original Overseas chronograph, but the bracelet’s flowing articulation keeps that assertive case from feeling like the whole story.

Introduced in 2004, this generation predates the interchangeable bracelet-and-strap system of the later Overseas, so choose it because you want this particular design—not because you expect the newer watch’s versatility. Inside, caliber 1137 is derived from the Frédéric Piguet 1185, a respected column-wheel chronograph movement, rather than Vacheron’s later in-house chronograph. When handling one, spend a moment with the screw-down pushers: their locking action should be clean, and the chronograph should start, stop, and reset correctly. Give the big date a proper look, too; both digits should sit neatly in their shared window.

What owners love

  • The Maltese-cross-link bracelet is a big part of why owners enjoy wearing it: the links articulate comfortably, and the mix of brushed surfaces and polished edges gives it character without needing a flashy dial.
  • The large date at 12 is genuinely useful, not just decoration. Owners also appreciate how the recessed chronograph registers give the dial depth while keeping the layout easy to read.

Common Criticisms

  • The bracelet clasp has no micro-adjustment, so getting the fit just right can be frustrating. There's no quick way to loosen it slightly when your wrist swells.
  • The screw-down chronograph pushers make spontaneous timing less convenient: you have to unscrew them before using the chronograph. It's a recurring annoyance for owners who actually use that function.
