The Overseas Chronograph 5500V gives Vacheron’s sports watch a busier, more purposeful face without losing the bracelet’s beautifully judged mix of brushed surfaces and polished edges. Its Maltese-cross-inspired links are part of the attraction, but the quick-change system makes switching to rubber or leather an equally important part of living with it.

Introduced with the third-generation Overseas in 2016, the 5500V brought the in-house caliber 5200, a column-wheel chronograph with a vertical clutch, into the collection. The blue dial is especially expressive in changing light; the silver dial offers a quieter contrast with the watch’s substantial case. If thickness matters to you, distinguish this reference from the later, slimmer 5520V. On the 5500V, pay particular attention to the proprietary strap attachments and their release mechanisms, and remember that the chronograph pushers screw down—a small practical detail that shapes how you use it.

What owners love

  • The quick-release system makes swapping between the bracelet, rubber and leather genuinely easy, without tools. Owners actually use it rather than treating the extra straps as something to leave in the box.
  • The bracelet’s Maltese-cross-inspired links look quite angular, but it feels supple on the wrist. The small extension built into the clasp is particularly welcome when your wrist swells during the day.
  • On the blue-dial version, the colour changes dramatically with the light—from almost navy to a vivid blue. That changing character is something owners keep enjoying well after the initial excitement wears off.

Common Criticisms

  • It wears substantial: the 42.5mm case, thickness and broad bracelet give it more wrist presence than the diameter alone suggests. Owners with smaller wrists sometimes find it top-heavy or awkward under a close-fitting cuff.
  • The screw-down chronograph pushers make timing something on the spur of the moment a faff. You have to unscrew them first, so the chronograph is less convenient in everyday use than its sporty appearance suggests.
