The Vacheron Constantin Fiftysix Self-Winding brings a relaxed, mid-century accent to a maker more often associated with formal dress watches. Its alternating Arabic numerals and baton markers, softly drawn lugs and two-tone dial give it personality without making it feel like a period reproduction. Introduced in 2018, the collection takes its cue from Vacheron’s reference 6073 of 1956, with lugs inspired by the arms of the Maltese cross.

For the clearest expression of that design, start with the silver-dial steel 4600E/000A-B442; the blue-dial 4600E/000A-B487 feels less formal, while 4600E/110A-B487 adds a bracelet. One distinction worth knowing before buying: the automatic 1326 does not carry the Hallmark of Geneva found on the more complicated Fiftysix models. It does, however, offer a view of a beautifully shaped gold rotor through the sapphire back.

What owners love

  • The dial has more depth than straight-on pictures suggest: the different finishes separate the center from the hour track, and the applied numerals and markers catch the light nicely. The alternating Arabic numerals also keep it from looking too formal.
  • The 40mm case is thin enough to sit comfortably under a cuff without feeling like a tiny dress watch. Owners appreciate being able to wear it with casual clothes as well as a jacket.

Common Criticisms

  • The 1326 is the recurring sticking point: its externally sourced movement base and lack of a Geneva Seal distinguish it from the other Fiftysix movements. For owners bothered by that distinction, the decorated rotor doesn't entirely make up for it.
