The Vacheron Constantin Fiftysix brings alternating Arabic numerals and baton markers, a neatly divided dial, and Maltese-cross-inspired lugs to a family that ranges from straightforward automatic winding to a tourbillon. Introduced in 2018, it takes its name and design cues from reference 6073 of 1956, translating that watch’s distinctive case details into a more contemporary everyday format.

The Fiftysix Self-Winding, including the 4600E reference family, is the cleanest expression: central seconds, a date at three, and caliber 1326 beneath the dial. Steel and pink-gold executions give the same architecture different temperaments. Its movement does not carry the Hallmark of Geneva, an important distinction from the more complicated members of the collection.

The Fiftysix Day-Date adds separate day and date subdials and a power-reserve indication. The Fiftysix Complete Calendar instead combines day and month windows with a pointer date and moonphase, preserving a surprisingly orderly dial. At the other end, the Fiftysix Tourbillon opens the lower dial to the regulating assembly; its peripheral winding rotor keeps the movement’s architecture visible through the caseback.

What owners love

  • The dial has more depth than it first appears: the contrasting central and outer sections, applied numerals and baton markers keep it interesting without making it busy. Owners of the blue-dial versions particularly enjoy how much the colour changes with the light.
  • The time-and-date Fiftysix wears neatly for a 40mm watch, with a slim case and lugs that sit comfortably on the wrist. Owners often describe it as easy to wear with casual clothes, rather than something reserved for dressing up.

Common Criticisms

  • The time-and-date model’s 1326 movement is the recurring sticking point: it uses a Richemont-group base and lacks the Geneva Seal found on the Fiftysix Day-Date and Complete Calendar. Some owners find that disappointing even while enjoying the watch itself.
