The Rolex Daytona is a chronograph family with a remarkably consistent face: three registers, a tachymeter bezel, and a dial built around elapsed time. Beneath that familiar layout, the distance from a manually wound vintage example to a modern automatic is substantial—and the bezel, pushers, and register positions help tell the generations apart.

Introduced in 1963, early Daytonas such as the 6239 used pump pushers; later references including the 6263 paired screw-down pushers with a black acrylic bezel. The automatic era arrived in 1988 with the 16520, powered by the Zenith-derived 4030. In 2000, the 116520 introduced Rolex’s own 4130, moving the running-seconds register from nine o’clock to six. That small dial change is a useful dividing line between two very different engines.

The steel 116500LN brought a black ceramic bezel in 2016, while the 2023 126500 generation introduced the 4131 and revised dial detailing. Across recent generations, steel, two-tone, and gold cases give the same chronograph architecture different personalities; selected gold versions pair ceramic bezels with Oysterflex rather than a metal bracelet.
