The Rolex Explorer II 16570 pairs a fixed steel 24-hour bezel with an independently adjustable local-hour hand: a travel watch with a distinctly utilitarian face. Choose the white-dial Polar for its black-outlined hands and markers, or the black dial for a quieter look with the same red GMT hand.

Produced from 1989 to 2011, this generation spans several meaningful changes. Earlier examples offer drilled lug holes and tritium lume; later watches bring brighter modern luminous material and, near the end of production, caliber 3186 in place of 3185. Both movements let you jump the local hour without disturbing the minutes or your home-time indication.

If you want aged tritium, pay attention to the dial’s “SWISS-T<25” signature and whether the hands have aged alongside the markers. Replacement luminous hands can change that character considerably. For regular nighttime use, a later luminous dial is the more practical choice.

What owners love

  • The 40mm case wears low and comfortably, and owners often prefer its slimmer proportions to the larger Explorer II that followed. It feels substantial without being bulky under a cuff.
  • The white “Polar” dial gets particular affection for its black-outlined hands and hour markers, which make it exceptionally easy to read in daylight. The black-dial version gives you a quieter look with the same straightforward layout.
  • The independently adjustable local-hour hand makes travel easy: you can change the main hour hand without stopping the watch or disturbing the minutes. The red 24-hour hand lets you keep home time visible against the fixed bezel.

Common Criticisms

  • The older bracelet’s stamped clasp feels tinny compared with the watch head, even though many owners find it comfortable. There’s no quick, tool-free adjustment when your wrist swells during the day.
  • Owners of earlier tritium-dial examples often find the lume barely glows anymore. Later luminous dials fare better, so nighttime readability isn’t consistent across the reference’s production run.
