The Rolex Daytona 116500LN brought a black ceramic bezel to the steel Daytona in 2016, giving its familiar chronograph layout a sharper frame. Choose the white dial for its crisp black subdial rings, or the black dial for silver-toned rings and a more continuous look against the bezel.

This generation pairs that ceramic exterior with Rolex’s established 4130, the automatic chronograph movement introduced in 2000. It remained in production until the 126500LN arrived in 2023; if you prefer the earlier watch’s broader hour markers and more substantial subdial rings, the 116500LN is the one to pursue.

The bezel deserves particular attention: ceramic resists everyday scratches well, but a hard knock can chip or crack it, especially at the edge. The screw-down chronograph pushers are also part of living with this Daytona—you must unscrew them before timing anything, a small ritual that makes it less spontaneous than an ordinary pump-pusher chronograph.

What owners love

  • It wears compactly for a 40mm chronograph, and the relatively thin case sits comfortably under a cuff. Owners often find it easier to wear all day than its busy dial might suggest.
  • The ceramic bezel holds up well against the small scratches that used to accumulate on steel Daytona bezels. On the white-dial version, the black bezel and black subdial rings give it the contrast owners particularly enjoy.
  • The bracelet feels solid without being cumbersome, and the Easylink extension is genuinely useful when your wrist swells in warm weather. It lets you make a quick adjustment without tools.

Common Criticisms

  • Reading the time at a glance can be harder than expected, particularly on the black dial: the polished hands can blend into the dial or reflections. The small chronograph registers aren't especially easy to read either.
  • The screw-down pushers make spontaneous timing awkward. You have to unscrew them before using the chronograph, so some owners end up using that function much less than they expected.
  • There's no date, and owners who use it as their everyday watch sometimes miss having one. The clean dial is a worthwhile trade-off for some, but not everyone.
