The Tudor Black Bay 54 brings the Black Bay’s familiar snowflake hands into a 37mm case that feels closer to an early dive watch than a scaled-down modern one. Its black dial, restrained bezel and compact proportions make it especially satisfying if you love vintage divers but want to wear one without treating it gingerly.

Introduced in 2023, the black-dial 79000N looks back to Tudor’s first dive watch, the 1954 7922, without copying it wholesale. The bezel’s lack of minute hashes between zero and fifteen is a particularly deliberate period touch. For everyday wear, the steel bracelet is worth seeking out: its T-fit clasp lets you adjust the fit without tools. The factory rubber strap offers a different feel, so pay attention to which configuration you’re considering. Inside, the modern MT5400 keeps this firmly in contemporary-watch territory.

What owners love

  • The 37mm case and relatively thin profile make the 54 noticeably less bulky than the Black Bay 58. Owners with smaller wrists particularly like how neatly it sits, without the tall, top-heavy feel of larger Black Bays.
  • The bracelet’s T-fit clasp lets you adjust the fit without tools as your wrist changes through the day. It’s one of the details owners repeatedly single out as making the watch comfortable to live with.
  • The black bezel without the usual first-15-minute hash marks gives it an unusually uncluttered look. Together with the gilt dial details and no date window, it feels restrained rather than busy.

Common Criticisms

  • The clasp is fairly long relative to the small watch head. Some owners find that it takes up more of the underside of their wrist than they’d like, despite appreciating the T-fit adjustment.
  • The 54 can look smaller than its 37mm measurement suggests, especially if you’re coming from a larger diver. Even some owners who like the comfort find the dial a little too compact for their taste.
