GMT-Master II 16710

The Rolex GMT-Master II 16710 family brings together aluminum-bezel GMTs whose character changes noticeably with the insert, dial generation, and bracelet details. What ties them together is the independently adjustable local-hour hand: a practical travel companion that lets the 24-hour hand keep home time while you cross time zones.

Produced from the late 1980s into the 2000s, these watches span several distinct configurations. The red-and-black Coke and red-and-blue Pepsi inserts divide the bezel into day and night; the black-bezel 16710LN takes a quieter approach. Unlike the later ceramic bezels, their aluminum inserts can acquire visibly different tones with age. Oyster and Jubilee bracelets give the same basic design quite different personalities.

The generational clues are smaller but worth knowing. Early tritium dials carry “SWISS-T<25” at six o’clock; later luminous materials brought “SWISS” and then “SWISS MADE” signatures. Drilled lug holes disappeared during production, while bracelet construction also evolved. Most examples use caliber 3185, with 3186 appearing in some late-production watches—a distinction that cannot reliably be settled by the dial alone.
