The Rolex GMT-Master II 16710 Coke pairs a black-and-red aluminum bezel with the slimmer case proportions that many enthusiasts prefer to the later ceramic generations. Its independently adjustable local-hour hand makes it a genuine travel companion, while the muted black half of the bezel gives the red just enough room to speak.

Produced from 1989 to 2007, the 16710 spans several useful collector distinctions. Early tritium dials offer aged luminous plots rather than dependable nighttime glow; later luminous materials suit anyone who wants to read the watch in the dark. Earlier drilled-lug cases make bracelet changes straightforward, while later examples gained solid end links for a more substantial bracelet connection.

The bezel insert deserves particular attention: the 16710 also came with all-black and red-and-blue inserts, and swapping them is common. A Coke bezel alone therefore doesn’t establish the watch’s original configuration. Most examples use caliber 3185; some very late watches have caliber 3186, which should be verified rather than inferred from dial typography.

What owners love

  • The relatively slim case and narrow lugs make it easy to wear all day. Owners who have also worn newer GMT-Master IIs often prefer how much less bulky the 16710 feels on the wrist.
  • The independently adjustable local-hour hand is genuinely useful when traveling: you can change local time without stopping the watch or disturbing the home-time setting. The rotating bezel also lets you read another time zone without resetting the hands.
  • The red-and-black aluminum bezel gives it some color without making the whole watch feel bright. Owners often enjoy how the red changes character in different light, and how a well-worn insert takes on its own look.

Common Criticisms

  • The Oyster bracelet’s stamped clasp feels surprisingly light and tinny, especially if you’re used to modern Rolex bracelets. It’s comfortable, but the clasp action and bracelet rattle aren’t everyone’s idea of reassuring construction.
  • There’s no conventional quickset date: you advance the date by moving the local-hour hand through midnight. Correcting it by several days means a fair amount of crown turning.
