The Omega Speedmaster 38 Co-Axial isn’t simply a smaller Moonwatch: its oval subdials, date at six and automatic movement give it a character of its own. It keeps the Speedmaster’s tachymeter bezel and familiar twisted lugs, but softens the instrument-panel look without losing the chronograph’s sense of purpose.

For the most straightforward expression, start with the black-dial steel 324.30.38.50.01.001 on a bracelet. Its restrained palette lets the unusual dial geometry do the talking. Inside, caliber 3330 brings column-wheel chronograph control and a Co-Axial escapement; it is chronometer-certified, but not a Master Chronometer. Try one on if you can: the modest diameter doesn’t mean a particularly thin watch. When assessing an example, run the chronograph through start, stop and reset, checking that the central seconds hand and both elapsed-time counters return cleanly to zero.

What owners love

  • The 38mm diameter and short lugs make it an easier fit on smaller wrists than the Moonwatch. You still get a clearly readable chronograph dial without the case spreading across your wrist.
  • Automatic winding and the date at six make this a practical everyday Speedmaster. Owners appreciate having the date without sacrificing a subdial or putting a window awkwardly between hour markers.

Common Criticisms

  • It is smaller across the wrist, but not particularly slim: the roughly 14.7mm thickness is a recurring complaint. The height is noticeable relative to the 38mm diameter, especially if you expected a smaller Speedmaster to slip easily under a shirt cuff.
