The Bulova Oceanographer Devil Diver gets its nickname from the “666 feet” depth rating printed on the dial, but its raised circular hour markers are just as memorable. The modern revival brings back the broad cushion case and exuberant dial furniture of Bulova’s 1972 Oceanographer, with a domed sapphire crystal that gives those markers room to play with the light.

The 44mm version is the one to consider if you want that generous, unmistakably seventies presence; its broad case deserves more attention than the diameter alone suggests. For a smaller take, the later 41mm Orange Dial version pairs a vivid dial with a black bezel and rubber strap rather than the larger model’s bracelet. Neither is a straight vintage substitute: the revival offers modern construction while keeping the wonderfully peculiar depth inscription. If you’re drawn to the bracelet-equipped 44mm, pay particular attention to how its cushion case and end links sit across your wrist.

What owners love

  • The raised, cylindrical hour markers give the dial a depth you don’t get from ordinary applied indices. Along with the crosshair and the “666 feet” text, they’re the details owners tend to enjoy most after the initial novelty wears off.
  • The cushion case wears more compactly than the 44mm diameter suggests, thanks to its short lugs. It still has plenty of wrist presence, but it doesn’t sprawl across the wrist like some other watches this size.

Common Criticisms

  • Compact lug-to-lug doesn’t mean small or light: the case is chunky, and on the bracelet there’s a noticeable amount of weight. Owners who like the dial but find the watch cumbersome often prefer wearing it on a strap.
