Bulova’s Accutron began in 1960 with a battery-powered tuning fork, replacing the balance wheel’s beat with a faint hum and a seconds hand that glided around the dial. The name now spans several generations of watchmaking, so the useful distinction is not a single case size or shape, but what drives the hands.

Original tuning-fork models are the starting point. The caliber 214 places its setting mechanism on the case back; the later caliber 218 uses a conventional crown. Both operate at 360 Hz, though their cases and dial designs vary considerably. The exposed workings of the Accutron Spaceview and the additional time-zone display of the Accutron Astronaut identify two distinct branches, rather than features shared by every Accutron.

Later watches carrying the name require a different reading. Accutron Quartz models belong to the quartz era, while Accutron II uses a high-frequency quartz movement with a smoothly advancing seconds hand, not a tuning fork. The modern Accutron DNA takes another route entirely: electrostatic generation and an electrostatic seconds-hand motor beneath a deliberately technical dial.
