The Bulova Lunar Pilot 43 brings the Apollo 15 connection into a smaller case than the earlier 45mm revival, without losing those distinctive elongated chronograph pushers. Its ancestor was the privately owned Bulova chronograph worn by Apollo 15’s commander on his third lunar excursion in 1971, after the crystal came off his NASA-issued watch.
The 43.5mm case is the reason to seek out this generation, though it still wears like a substantial instrument rather than a compact chronograph. Choose 96K111 for the black dial closest in spirit to the original, or 98K112 for the white-and-blue treatment that makes the subdials more conspicuous. Both use Bulova’s high-frequency quartz NP20, so this is a different proposition from a mechanical moonwatch. When trying one, pay attention to how the long pushers sit against your wrist, and confirm that the chronograph hands reset cleanly to zero.
