The Bulova Lunar Pilot 45 brings an unusually good Moon story to a quartz chronograph: its ancestor accompanied Apollo 15’s commander onto the lunar surface in 1971 after the crystal came off his NASA-issued watch. The modern version keeps the original’s instrument-like dial and distinctive elongated pushers, but trades the mechanical movement for Bulova’s high-frequency quartz technology.
For the familiar black-dial, steel-case version, 96B251 is the strap-equipped reference, while 96B258 comes on a bracelet. The choice matters on a watch this substantial: the 45mm case and long lugs need more wrist real estate than the diameter alone suggests. Don’t confuse it with the later 43.5mm Lunar Pilot, which offers a more compact fit. One useful detail when getting acquainted: the large central hand belongs to the chronograph, not the running seconds, so its remaining still during ordinary use is entirely normal.
