The Submariner 16610LV earned its Kermit nickname with a green aluminum bezel and a black dial—a small change that gave a familiar Rolex a distinctly different character. Introduced in 2003 for the Submariner’s 50th anniversary, it paired the traditional case proportions with a “Maxi” dial, whose larger luminous plots and broader minute hand make it more than a standard Sub with a different bezel.

For the original anniversary expression, early examples with the Flat Four bezel insert are worth understanding: the nickname describes the flattened top of the numeral 4 in “40.” Later inserts have a pointed 4, and both belong to the model’s production run. The aluminum insert is also the detail to scrutinize, since replacement inserts can change a watch’s appearance and erase the distinction that makes an early example interesting. Unlike the later green-dial Hulk, the Kermit keeps its color at the perimeter; on the wrist, that restraint is much of its charm.

What owners love

The green aluminum bezel gives it some personality without turning the whole watch green. Against the black dial, it can look quite restrained indoors, then much brighter in sunlight.
The larger hour markers and broader minute hand make the dial easier to read than the standard five-digit Submariner’s. You get that extra visibility while keeping the slimmer lugs of the older case.
Owners often appreciate how comfortably the 40mm case wears: it feels less bulky than the later ceramic Submariners. The relatively light bracelet also helps it sit easily on the wrist through a full day.

Common Criticisms

The stamped clasp and hollow center links can feel rattly and surprisingly basic next to the watch itself. The clasp also lacks the convenient fine adjustment of the later Glidelock, which owners notice when their wrists swell.
The aluminum bezel insert picks up scratches more readily than ceramic. Some owners enjoy the wear, but others find marks on that prominent green ring distracting.
