The Speedmaster First Omega in Space brings the straight lugs and alpha hands of the early Speedmaster into a watch with Omega’s modern 3861 movement. Its blue-grey dial is the quiet surprise: more changeable in the light than the familiar black Moonwatch, and particularly well suited to that smaller, symmetrical case.

This is the 2024 generation, not the black-dial version introduced in 2012 with 1861. Both recall the privately purchased Speedmaster worn aboard the Sigma 7 mission in October 1962, before NASA selected the Speedmaster for its astronauts. The newer watch adds Master Chronometer certification and a domed sapphire crystal shaped to evoke the acrylic crystals of the originals.

Choose 310.30.40.50.06.001 for the steel bracelet or 310.32.40.50.06.001 for leather. The bracelet makes this generation worth trying even if you preferred the earlier model on a strap; its fit changes how those straight lugs sit on the wrist.

What owners love

  • The blue-grey dial changes noticeably with the light: subdued indoors, then much bluer in daylight, with the sunburst finish becoming more obvious. That shifting appearance is a big part of what makes this version enjoyable to wear.
  • The straight-lug case and absence of crown guards give it a different feel from the Moonwatch, not just a smaller diameter. Owners who find the Professional a little bulky often like how this one sits on the wrist.
  • The domed sapphire gives you the curved reflections associated with the older acrylic crystal, without requiring the same attention to scratches. It works particularly well with the stepped dial and applied Omega logo.

Common Criticisms

  • The polished alpha hour and minute hands can disappear against the dial at certain angles. They look good, but reading the time sometimes takes a wrist tilt that wouldn't be necessary with the Moonwatch's white hands.
  • The deliberately aged-looking lume is divisive. Some owners enjoy the warmer colour; others wish Omega had paired this dial with white lume instead.
