The Speedmaster Apollo 8 brings the Moon into the movement itself, with lunar relief visible through the open dial and sapphire caseback. Black ceramic and sharp yellow accents make it a very different proposition from the familiar Moonwatch, even before you turn it over.

Introduced in 2018 for the mission’s 50th anniversary, 311.92.44.30.01.001 uses the hand-wound caliber 1869, a decorated relative of the Moonwatch’s 1861. The dial side depicts the Moon’s near side; the back reveals its far side, which the Apollo 8 crew saw firsthand in 1968. That connection gives the decoration a purpose beyond spectacle.

This is the original generation, not the later caliber 3869 version with its rocket-shaped small-seconds hand. Choose it for the simpler seconds display and the older movement architecture. Pay particular attention to the ceramic lug edges and case flanks: ceramic resists scratches well, but chips are another matter.

What owners love

  • The laser-etched skeletonized dial and movement, inspired by lunar surface imagery, make this one of the most visually striking and unique Speedmasters ever produced.
  • The yellow accents throughout the hands, text, and even the strap provide a dynamic contrast that sets it apart from other Speedmaster models.
  • The decorated Caliber 1869 manual movement, visible from both sides, is praised for its thematic finishing and connection to the Apollo 8 mission.

Common Criticisms

  • The 44.3mm case size is widely considered large and wears even bigger due to the long lug-to-lug measurement.
  • Legibility suffers in certain lighting conditions because the skeletonized dial can make it hard to read the hands quickly.
  • The stock leather/rubber strap is criticized for being stiff and uncomfortable out of the box.
