The third-generation Planet Ocean pairs the line’s broad-arrow hands and substantial dive-watch proportions with ceramic dials and Master Chronometer movements. Introduced in 2016, it’s the generation to consider if you like the original’s purposeful look but want Omega’s newer movement technology and a richer, glossier dial finish.

The important distinction is between the 43.5mm models, such as 215.30.44.21.01.001 with caliber 8900, and the smaller 39.5mm versions, including 215.30.40.20.01.001 with caliber 8800. The larger watch gives you an independently adjustable hour hand—a genuinely useful feature when crossing time zones. The smaller one brings the same design into a more compact footprint.

Neither is a thin watch, so diameter alone won’t tell you how it wears. Pay attention to the clasp’s sliding adjustment, which helps manage that substantial bracelet, and inspect the ceramic bezel for chipped edges: scratch resistance doesn’t make ceramic immune to a sharp knock.

What owners love

  • The ceramic dial and bezel reward a closer look: the dial has real depth, and the bezel markings look clean and sharply defined. The broad hands and strong lume make it easy to read without losing that detail.
  • The bracelet’s push-button clasp adjustment is genuinely useful when your wrist swells during the day. Owners appreciate being able to change the fit without taking out tools or settling for a slightly loose bracelet.
  • Accurate running is a recurring owner highlight. On versions with the 8900, the independently adjustable hour hand is also handy for changing time zones without disturbing the minutes and seconds.

Common Criticisms

  • The thickness and weight are the main sticking points: the 43.5mm case has substantial wrist presence, and it can feel top-heavy if the bracelet is worn loose. Getting it under a snug shirt cuff is awkward.
  • The external antireflective coating can pick up marks even when the sapphire itself is unscratched. Owners like how clear the crystal looks, but visible coating marks are a recurring frustration.
