Altichron

The Citizen Altichron puts altitude on the wrist, with modern versions pairing an electronic altimeter and compass with an analog display. The attraction is the way those instruments share the dial with ordinary timekeeping: hands, scales, and color-coded indications turn a tool watch into something worth studying even at sea level.

The family began in 1989 with an electronic altimeter and a mixed analog-digital display. Citizen’s 2013 revival took a different route, using Eco-Drive power and hands rather than a digital screen to communicate its measurements. That distinction matters more than the family name alone: an early Altichron and a later solar-powered model offer quite different experiences, both visually and in operation.

Among the later references, BN5030 has the deeply layered, instrument-panel dial associated with the revival. The BN4044 and BN4045 take a more conventional approach to the layout, with prominent hour markings and a clearer separation between time and instrument scales. The separately named Altichron Cirrus pushes the sculptural treatment further, making dial architecture a central part of its character.
