Promaster Aqualand
The Citizen Promaster Aqualand is a dive watch whose most memorable feature actually does something: that conspicuous depth sensor turns an instrument for timing a dive into one that measures it, too. The original Aqualand arrived in 1985 with an electronic depth gauge, and the familiar ana-digi descendants still carry the slightly improbable charm of serious diving equipment made wrist-sized.
For that classic experience, start with the JP2000: analog hands keep the time readable while the digital display handles depth information and dive records. Its sensor housing gives it an unmistakable profile, but the attraction goes beyond the silhouette. If you prefer hands to a digital screen, the Eco-Drive BJ2167 and BJ2168 take the concept in a different direction, combining solar power with analog depth indication.
On an older ana-digi example, ask specifically whether the depth-sensing functions work—not merely whether the hands run. A functioning display alone doesn’t establish that the watch’s defining instrument is healthy.
What owners love
- The protruding depth sensor gives the Aqualand a shape owners get attached to—it looks like equipment because it actually is. The big hands and clear hour markers keep the time easy to read despite the unusual case.
- On the ana-digi JP2000, owners appreciate having depth readings and dive-memory functions alongside an ordinary analog display. Even people who rarely use the diving functions enjoy that they are genuine tools rather than decorative extras.
Common Criticisms
- The JP2000's supplied rubber strap gets complaints for being stiff and having more length than you need on a bare wrist. Some owners find the watch considerably more comfortable after changing it.
- The depth-sensor housing makes the case feel broader than its diameter suggests. Owners with smaller wrists sometimes find that protrusion awkward, particularly under a close-fitting sleeve.
