The Timex Marlin Chronograph takes the Marlin’s mid-century dress-watch vocabulary and gives it a busier, sportier dial, framed by a pronounced domed acrylic crystal. It’s a quartz chronograph—not an automatic Marlin with a stopwatch added—and that distinction matters more than the family resemblance when you’re choosing one.
The crystal does much of the work here, softening the dial’s geometry and adding distortion toward its edges. At 40mm, though, this is a modern-sized watch rather than a close recreation of a small vintage Marlin. Choose the dial treatment for how readily you can separate the hands from the subdials, not just its color. On a used example, check that the chronograph hands return cleanly to zero, and distinguish ordinary acrylic scuffs from cracks around the crystal’s perimeter.
