The Sinn 556 MOP puts mother-of-pearl inside one of the German maker’s most restrained steel watches, without turning it into a dress watch. The pleasure is in that contrast: a straightforward, satin-finished case frames a dial whose texture and shifting reflections reward a second look. At 38.5mm, it also keeps the dial treatment intimate rather than making a spectacle of it.

Choose this version for the dial, not for a particular movement generation: examples with the ETA 2824-2 and SW200-1 retain the same basic character. Mother-of-pearl varies naturally, so the pattern of the individual dial matters more here than it does on a conventional 556. It’s also worth distinguishing marks in the sapphire’s outer anti-reflective coating from damage to the crystal itself; they can catch the light just when you’re trying to enjoy the dial.
