Turn-O-Graph

The Rolex Turn-O-Graph pairs a rotating timing bezel with a character that shifts from early tool watch to unusually purposeful Datejust. That bezel is the thread to follow: across generations, it gives you a simple way to mark elapsed minutes without a chronograph.

Introduced in 1953, the 6202 wore a black bezel insert and had no date—a markedly different watch from the Datejust-based versions that followed. Those later models brought the date window, Cyclops magnifier, and metal timing bezel into familiar Datejust territory. The “Thunderbird” nickname came through the model’s association with the U.S. Air Force demonstration squadron; it remains part of the Turn-O-Graph’s vocabulary, particularly among collectors of earlier examples.

The two-tone 16253, with its yellow-gold bezel and 3035 caliber, belongs to the earlier quickset-date generation. The steel 16264 combines a white-gold bezel with the later 3135. Still later, references such as the 116264 sharpened the visual distinction with red seconds hands, red date numerals, and red Turn-O-Graph lettering: small accents that make these watches readily distinguishable from their quieter predecessors.
