The Rolex Explorer 214270 gives the familiar black dial and 3-6-9 layout a little more breathing room, moving the Explorer from 36mm to 39mm without adding anything to its spare design. It’s a natural choice if you love the Explorer’s restraint but prefer a broader presence on the wrist.

Introduced in 2010, this reference comes in two distinct dial-and-hand configurations. The original Mark I has polished, non-luminous white-gold numerals and a minute hand that stops noticeably short of the minute track. The 2016 update, commonly called Mark II, brings luminous 3-6-9 numerals and longer, fuller hands. That later version is easier to read at night and more evenly proportioned; the earlier one offers a quieter dial, with numerals that catch the light rather than glow.

When comparing examples, establish which configuration you’re considering rather than relying on the stated year alone. Both share the automatic caliber 3132 and an Oyster bracelet with Easylink adjustment, useful when your wrist expands during the day.

What owners love

  • The dial is easy to read at a glance, without a date window breaking it up. Owners of the later-dial version particularly appreciate the luminous 3, 6 and 9, which make the layout recognizable in the dark too.
  • The bracelet and clasp are a big part of why it stays on the wrist: solid-feeling, comfortable, and easy to adjust. The Easylink extension is genuinely useful when your wrist swells during the day.
  • The 39mm case gives the Explorer more presence than the older 36mm versions without making it especially thick. Owners who prefer that size often describe it as substantial enough to enjoy looking at, but unobtrusive once they're wearing it.

Common Criticisms

  • The early version's minute hand looks too short for the enlarged dial, and its white-gold 3, 6 and 9 have no lume. These are recurring owner gripes; the later version received longer hands and luminous numerals.
  • Some owners find the broad dial and extra space around its markings less balanced than the 36mm Explorer. The criticism isn't necessarily that 39mm is too large to wear, but that the enlarged layout loses some of the smaller watch's compactness.
