The Rolex Deepsea 116660 is the dive watch for someone who finds a Submariner a little too restrained: tall, heavily built, and unmistakable under its domed sapphire crystal. Its charm is that Rolex let the engineering show, from the prominent Ringlock lettering around the dial to a case built for depths no wearer will approach.

Introduced in 2008, this first-generation Deepsea uses the familiar 3135; the real choice is between the straightforward black dial and the D-Blue, added in 2014 to commemorate the 2012 solo descent into the Mariana Trench. The latter’s blue-to-black gradient and green DEEPSEA lettering give an otherwise resolutely functional watch an unexpected flash of color. Try this generation on before committing: its relatively narrow bracelet beneath that substantial case is part of its distinctive feel. The later 126660 gained a wider bracelet, so the difference matters on the wrist. The original’s Glidelock clasp does allow fine adjustment without tools.
