The Nautilus Chronograph keeps the familiar rounded bezel and horizontally embossed dial, but gives the design a distinctly busier heartbeat. Its clever touch is the single counter at six: elapsed hours and minutes share one subdial, leaving room for the Nautilus to remain recognizably itself.

Introduced in 2006 for the collection’s 30th anniversary, the 5980 brought an automatic flyback chronograph to the family with the CH 28-520 C. The blue-dial steel 5980/1A-001 is the natural starting point for anyone drawn to the original execution; the rose-gold 5980R on leather feels quite different from the bracelet-equipped 5980/1R. Try that shared counter before deciding—it is tidy, but reading two elapsed-time hands takes some acquaintance. When testing the chronograph, make sure both counter hands return cleanly to zero, including during a flyback reset.
