Christopher Ward’s C1 designation spans several very different expressions of the dress watch, from traditional Roman numerals to an exposed hourly chiming mechanism. What connects them is an emphasis on the dial as a stage for watchmaking, rather than a single case size, movement, or generation.

The early C1 Russell took its cues from pocket watches, pairing Roman numerals with a small-seconds display and quartz power. The later C1 Grand Malvern watches brought a more contemporary vocabulary: cleaner markers, restrained dial furniture, and gently curved cases. Within that generation, the C1 Grand Malvern Power Reserve is particularly distinctive, using Christopher Ward’s SH21 automatic caliber and a dial-side indicator for its five-day power reserve.

More recent branches move the mechanics into the foreground. The C1 Bel Canto places its time display above a visible chiming assembly; its hammer sounds the passing hour, not a minute-repeater sequence. The C1 Moonphase takes another route, giving a large moon display room against an aventurine dial. Those names matter: they distinguish fundamentally different watches beneath the same C1 heading.
