Christopher Ward’s The Twelve brings a twelve-sided bezel, an integrated bracelet, and a sharply textured dial into a design that rewards a closer look. Since its 2023 debut, the family has grown beyond the original 40mm watches, with smaller cases, titanium versions, and openworked models offering distinctly different takes on the same architecture.
The steel The Twelve established the template: alternating brushed and polished surfaces, a dial patterned with repeating forms drawn from the brand’s twin-flags emblem, and the automatic Sellita SW200-1. The 36mm version keeps that visual language in a more compact footprint. The original 40mm The Twelve Ti pairs titanium construction with the slimmer, chronometer-certified Sellita SW300-1; its dégradé dial treatment also distinguishes it from the launch steel models.
The The Twelve X takes a more mechanical direction. Its 41mm titanium case frames an extensively skeletonised SH21, exposing the twin barrels that deliver a five-day power reserve. Where the closed-dial versions put texture and colour at centre stage, the X makes the movement’s structure the face of the watch.
What owners love
- The bracelet is a big part of why owners keep wearing it: the links articulate freely, and the thin case sits close to the wrist rather than feeling perched on top. The original 40mm steel version is particularly easy to wear for a watch with such an angular case.
- The raised dial pattern changes noticeably with the light—fairly subdued straight on, much livelier as you turn your wrist. Owners often find it more interesting in person than the flat, repetitive texture it can look like in photographs.
- The alternating brushed and polished surfaces give you plenty to notice without needing a loud dial colour. The bezel edges and bracelet facets are details owners repeatedly single out as especially well executed.
Common Criticisms
- The original bracelet supplied with the 40mm steel Twelve has a butterfly clasp without on-the-fly adjustment. Owners whose wrists swell during the day can find themselves choosing between a slightly loose fit and a slightly tight one; later bracelets with micro-adjustment address this complaint.
