The Seiko King Seiko 56KS brings the crisp casework and restrained dials of early-1970s Japanese watchmaking to a slim automatic you can happily wear every day. Its charm is in the contrast: sharp planes and polished edges around a dial that rarely raises its voice. Made by Suwa, rather than the Daini factory behind earlier King Seiko families, the 56KS belongs to the period when Seiko’s two factories were both producing watches worthy of serious attention.

Choose the 5625 caliber for a date alone, or the 5626 for day and date; the latter powers references including 5626-7040 and 5626-7041. The calendar deserves particular attention: the quickset corrector’s plastic wheel is a known weak point, so confirm that the mechanism actually works. Equally, look for case edges that remain distinct—heavy polishing softens much of what makes a good 56KS so satisfying.

What owners love

  • The sharp case edges and flat surfaces are a big part of the pleasure of wearing one: they catch the light without making the watch look flashy. At 36.5mm, it feels compact rather than bulky on the wrist.
  • The automatic 5626 also hand-winds and lets you stop the seconds hand to set it precisely. Owners appreciate those practical touches in a vintage watch, along with the clean, easy-to-read dial.

Common Criticisms

  • The day/date quickset mechanism is the recurring weak point: its original plastic corrector wheel can become brittle and break, leaving the quickset inoperative. Owners are especially careful not to use it while the calendar is engaged in its overnight change.
