The King Seiko 44KS gets much of its character from the contrast between a restrained dial and sharply faceted lugs. Those broad, angular surfaces give this hand-wound Seiko a presence that its 36.5mm diameter alone doesn’t explain, while the slender hands and applied markers keep the dial wonderfully uncluttered.

Made by Daini Seikosha during Seiko’s push toward higher-grade mechanical watches in the 1960s, the family offers a few distinct routes in. The 44-9990 is the natural choice for an uninterrupted, no-date dial; the 44-2000 adds a date, while the 4420-9990 brings chronometer designation. Pay particular attention to the transitions between the lug facets: polishing can soften the geometry that makes these cases so satisfying. The gold-colored King Seiko medallion on the caseback deserves a close look too, since worn or missing examples lose a distinctive part of the watch’s identity.

What owners love

  • The angular case is the main attraction: broad polished planes and sharply defined edges catch the light as you move your wrist. It has a much stronger presence than the 36.5mm diameter suggests, without feeling oversized.
  • The faceted hands and applied hour markers give the dial depth without making it busy. Owners enjoy how a seemingly restrained dial changes character in different light.
