The Seiko Alpinist SPB121J1, also sold as SBDC091 in Japan, puts a green sunburst dial, gold-tone cathedral hands and an internal compass bezel into a watch that feels equally comfortable with hiking boots or a shirt cuff. The unusual mix is the attraction: dressy details, practical proportions and a second crown that gives the case its unmistakable silhouette.

Introduced in 2020, this generation followed the much-loved SARB017, adding the 6R35 movement, a display back and a date magnifier while retaining the familiar green-and-gold palette. That magnifier and the Prospex logo are the visual dividing lines between generations; choose this one if those changes suit you rather than assuming the newer watch is automatically preferable. Pay particular attention to the compass bezel’s operation through the lower crown: it should turn smoothly, though it isn’t designed to click into fixed positions.

What owners love

  • The green dial changes noticeably with the light, from dark and subdued to a bright sunburst, and the gold hands and markers give it warmth. It’s the detail owners keep coming back to after the novelty wears off.
  • The 39.5mm case and relatively short lugs make it easy to wear on smaller wrists without looking tiny. The cathedral hands and internal compass ring give it a distinctive look without needing a large case.
  • It takes particularly well to strap changes: leather brings out the green-and-gold combination, while a fabric strap makes it feel more outdoorsy. Owners often enjoy the watch much more once they replace the supplied strap.

Common Criticisms

  • The 6R35 can be frustratingly inconsistent, with owners reporting noticeable changes in timekeeping depending on position and how fully wound it is. Not every example behaves badly, but accuracy is a recurring complaint.
  • The supplied leather strap is often described as stiff and uncomfortable at first, and the deployant clasp doesn’t sit comfortably on every wrist. It’s a common early replacement.
  • The date magnifier is divisive: some owners find it visually intrusive on an otherwise attractive dial. It’s a particularly frequent gripe among people who preferred the cleaner crystal of the older Alpinist.
