The Seiko Alpinist SPB119J1, also known as SBDC089, trades the line’s familiar green-and-gold palette for a pale dial and a quieter personality. The cathedral hands and rotating internal compass ring remain, giving this version the same slightly eccentric field-watch character without making color the main event.

Introduced with the 2020 Prospex Alpinist generation, it pairs the 6R35 movement with sapphire crystal and a date magnifier—useful distinctions if you’re weighing it against an earlier Alpinist. The magnifier is also worth deciding on for yourself: it makes the date easier to read but interrupts an otherwise restrained dial. The original black leather strap suits that restraint, though the case readily takes a more outdoors-minded strap. One model-specific check is the compass ring’s operation through the crown at four; make sure it turns smoothly rather than treating that second crown as decoration.
