The Seiko Alpinist SARB017 pairs a sunburst green dial with gilt cathedral hands and alternating Arabic numerals and triangular markers—a combination that feels dressier than its mountain-watch brief suggests. The second crown, tucked down at four o’clock, operates an internal compass bezel and gives this compact Seiko its unmistakable profile.

Introduced in 2006, this generation carried the Alpinist name forward from Seiko’s original 1959 mountaineering watch. Enthusiasts often favor the SARB017 over its later Prospex successor for what isn’t on the dial: no Prospex logo, and no magnifier over the date. Its 6R15 movement also places it firmly in the earlier generation, rather than the newer 6R35-powered family.

When handling one, try the compass crown and make sure the inner ring turns smoothly; it’s a distinctive feature worth having in working order. The original brown leather strap is part of the familiar look, though the green-and-gold dial takes particularly well to other straps.

What owners love

  • The green dial changes noticeably with the light, looking almost black indoors and much brighter in sunlight. The gold numerals and cathedral hands give it a character owners still enjoy after years of wear.
  • The compact case wears comfortably without feeling dainty, and the watch looks surprisingly different on different straps. Owners often find that a softer leather strap or a bracelet makes it much easier to wear regularly.

Common Criticisms

  • The supplied brown leather strap is a frequent disappointment: stiff, heavily padded, and not especially comfortable. Many owners replace it rather than wait for it to break in.
  • The internal compass bezel is more charming than useful for many owners. Its crown can turn unintentionally, leaving the compass markings out of position.
