The Hublot MDM takes you back to the brand before the Big Bang, when a restrained, porthole-inspired case and rubber strap did the talking. At 36mm, it wears with a compactness that makes the exposed bezel screws feel like purposeful hardware rather than decoration.
Hublot launched in 1980 with an unusual pairing of gold and rubber, and gold-cased MDM examples capture that original contrast especially well: warm metal, a dark strap, and very little fuss on the dial. Steel versions give the same design a quieter character. When choosing between them, pay particular attention to the rubber strap and its fit at the case; aging rubber can split, and the fitted attachment makes replacement less straightforward than swapping an ordinary strap. The clasp matters too, both to the fit and to preserving the watch’s unusually cohesive design.
