Grand Seiko Hi-Beat is a family tied together by the quick cadence of its escapement, not a single case, dial, or generation. Its best-known movements run at 36,000 vibrations per hour—ten beats each second—giving the seconds hand a closely spaced sweep, whether you favor a vintage hand-wound watch or a modern automatic.

The late-1960s 61GS and 45GS established two distinct paths: automatic winding for the former, manual winding for the latter. Modern Hi-Beat production returned with 9S85 in 2009, combining that fast beat with automatic winding, a date, and roughly 55 hours of power reserve. The related 9S86 adds a GMT hand, making travel functionality another meaningful distinction within the wider family.

The newer 9SA5, introduced in 2020, represents a deeper mechanical redesign rather than simply a longer-running 9S85: its Dual Impulse Escapement and twin barrels deliver an 80-hour reserve. Across these generations, case proportions and dial treatments vary considerably.
