Hi-Beat 56GS
The Grand Seiko Hi-Beat 56GS brings early-1970s Grand Seiko into a compact automatic watch, with the crisp dial furniture and restrained proportions that make this period so rewarding. Its “Hi-Beat” label means 28,800 vibrations per hour here—not the 36,000 of the earlier 61GS—so it has its own place in the family rather than simply following the same formula.
Made by Suwa, the 56GS offers a useful choice between the date-only 5645 and day-date 5646 calibers. A 5645-7010 is worth considering if you prefer the simpler calendar display; the 5646-7010 adds the weekday without abandoning that tidy presentation. The particular mechanical point to investigate is the calendar quickset: the 56-series correction wheel is a known weak spot. Ask whether both calendar functions advance correctly and whether that component has been replaced—a detail that matters more here than the Hi-Beat lettering might suggest.
