The Grand Seiko SBGW231 is a quietly absorbing watch: a warm ivory dial, sharply faceted hands and hour markers, and no date window to interrupt the arrangement. Its 37.3mm case keeps everything intimate, while the polished surfaces give you plenty to watch as the light changes.

Introduced in 2017, it followed the SBGW001, replacing that watch’s Seiko-at-the-top branding with the Grand Seiko name and emblem alone. Choose the earlier reference if you enjoy the old dial signature; the SBGW231 offers a cleaner expression of much the same idea. The hand-wound 9S64, visible through the caseback, makes winding part of the relationship rather than an occasional necessity.

On a used example, pay particular attention to the crisp transitions between polished and brushed case surfaces: refinishing can soften them. And despite its everyday proportions, its modest water resistance calls for keeping it out of the pool.

What owners love

The ivory dial is warmer and less stark than it looks in many pictures. Against that quiet background, the polished hands and faceted hour markers catch the light in ways that keep a very simple dial interesting.
The 37.3mm case feels compact without making the dial feel cramped. Owners particularly like how the slim bezel and absence of a date window let the proportions do the work.
Hand-winding the 9S64 is part of the enjoyment: the crown is easy to grip and the winding feels smooth and deliberate. The display back gives you something to look at beyond the restrained dial.

Common Criticisms

It is thicker than its small diameter and dressy appearance might suggest. The domed crystal contributes to that height, so it doesn't wear like an ultra-thin dress watch.
The 30m water-resistance rating is a recurring frustration for owners who would otherwise happily wear it every day. It puts a practical limit on a watch whose size and understated dial make it easy to reach for.
