Chopard began in 1860 in the Swiss village of Sonvilier, where Louis-Ulysse Chopard made pocket watches. The Scheufele family took over in 1963, and the company remains family-owned. Its watchmaking has two distinct personalities: the playful movement of loose diamonds beneath sapphire, and the quieter pleasures of finely finished mechanical movements. Neither feels like an afterthought.

The L.U.C collection is where the movement enthusiast should linger. Chopard established its manufacture in Fleurier in 1996, developing the micro-rotor caliber 1.96 with twin stacked barrels. That foundation supports a range stretching from restrained dress watches to substantial complications, with finishing worth turning the watch over for.

For something more outwardly expressive, Alpine Eagle arrived in 2019, reworking ideas from the St. Moritz of 1980: an integrated bracelet, exposed bezel screws, and sharply defined case surfaces. Its textured dial takes inspiration from an eagle’s iris. Meanwhile, Happy Sport puts freely moving diamonds into an everyday wristwatch, letting them skate across the dial as your wrist moves.
