The Casio MRG-B5000 takes the square G-Shock back to its 1983 outline, then rebuilds it with the finishing usually reserved for a very different kind of watch. The pleasure is in the contrast: familiar digital utility, now framed by sharply defined edges, polished facets, and a titanium bracelet.

Introduced in 2022, this is more than a titanium version of the regular metal square. Its bezel is divided into 25 components, allowing surfaces to be polished individually while small buffers preserve shock protection. The result rewards close inspection without losing the blunt practicality that makes a square G-Shock worth wearing.

For the clearest everyday display, favor the silver MRG-B5000D and its positive LCD. The black MRG-B5000B pairs gold accents with a negative display; MRG-B5000BA substitutes blue accents. Try those negative displays in ordinary indoor light: their darker appearance is attractive, but readability is the meaningful trade-off.

What owners love

  • The finishing is the part owners keep coming back to: the polished edges, brushed surfaces and separate bezel components give the familiar square much more depth up close. It rewards looking closely without changing the basic G-Shock shape.
  • The titanium bracelet versions feel noticeably lighter on the wrist than the steel full-metal squares. Owners appreciate getting that substantial metal construction without quite so much weight, while solar charging and automatic time correction keep daily upkeep minimal.

Common Criticisms

  • On the negative-display versions, legibility still depends on the light and viewing angle. The STN display helps, but owners who want an immediately readable screen can still find themselves using the backlight where a positive display would be easier to read.
