The Breitling Superocean Automatic 42 offers two quite different takes on a dive watch: the bold Arabic numerals of A17366, or the broad minute track and square-tipped minute hand of the newer A17375. Both feel unmistakably Breitling, but choosing between them is as much about how you read a dial as how you like it to look.

The 2022 redesign draws on Breitling’s 1960s Slow Motion dive chronograph, borrowing its distinctive visual language rather than its chronograph function. That oversized minute hand makes elapsed time the main event; the wide contrasting ring also makes the dial feel smaller than the case diameter suggests. Choose A17366 if you prefer prominent hour numerals and a more conventional diver layout. On the newer watch, pay particular attention to whether the hand and minute-track contrast suits your eye: it’s the defining feature, not a decorative afterthought.

What owners love

  • The dial is easy to read at a glance, with strong contrast and hands that don’t disappear against the hour markers. Owners appreciate that practical clarity as much as the choice of dial colours.
  • On the Breitling rubber strap, it’s comfortable enough for regular all-day wear. The strap suits the case well and makes the 42mm Superocean feel less cumbersome than its size might suggest.

Common Criticisms

  • The roughly 38-hour power reserve of the Breitling 17 is a recurring gripe. It’s a dependable movement, but owners sometimes wish Breitling had given this model a more modern movement specification.
  • On the newer A17375 and U17375 versions, the square-ended minute hand divides opinion. Some owners enjoy the distinctive look; others prefer the more conventional hands and Arabic numerals of the earlier A17366.
