The Breitling Super Ocean II brings the brand’s taste for bold instrument dials to a straightforward, three-hand diver. Its broad hands, oversized Arabic numerals and rubber-moulded bezel give it a distinctly different character from the more restrained Superocean Heritage: this is the sporty one, and it doesn’t pretend to be small.

For the 44mm second-generation model introduced in 2015, look for A17392; Superocean naming can blur together watches from different generations. Inside is the automatic Breitling 17, based on the familiar ETA 2824-2 architecture rather than an in-house movement. On the wrist, the case’s thickness matters as much as its diameter, so this is worth trying on if you’re between sizes. Pay particular attention to the rubber bezel surface: cuts and worn edges can interrupt one of this generation’s most distinctive details.

What owners love

  • The big Arabic numerals and strong lume make the dial easy to read at a glance. Owners particularly like how clearly the hands stand out, even with the smaller 24-hour scale adding detail to the dial.
  • The bezel has a firm, positive action, and the case feels reassuringly solid. Those are details owners appreciate in everyday use, rather than just when handling it for the first time.

Common Criticisms

  • The 44mm case is chunky, and on the steel bracelet the weight is noticeable over a full day. Owners who like its substantial feel still acknowledge that it can be awkward under a close-fitting cuff.
