The Breitling Navitimer 8 is the Navitimer without the slide rule: a quieter pilot’s watch whose bold Arabic numerals and rotating bezel owe more to cockpit instruments than flight calculations. At 41mm, this three-hand automatic offers a less crowded dial than Breitling’s chronographs, with enough visual weight to avoid feeling anonymous.

Introduced in 2018, the collection took its name from Breitling’s Huit Aviation department, established in 1938 to make aircraft instruments; “huit” referred to their eight-day running reserve, not this watch’s movement. The line later became Aviator 8, so the earlier Navitimer-signed version is worth seeking if that short-lived naming chapter interests you. Inside is the automatic Breitling 17. Try the bidirectional bezel when handling one: its single pointer is useful for marking elapsed time, and its action is part of this watch’s character.
