Good afternoon, WatchEx! Third listing for today: the most faithful homage of the OG Paul Newman, the Gevril Tribeca Chronograph. This ought to be a fun exercise. If you're a vintage watch junkie, a smaller chronograph lover, or always wanted to try a vintage Daytona/Newman but don't have six figures to drop on a watch, this is the watch for you. It's not an unpopular opinion to say that the Paul Newman Rolex is among the greatest watches ever built - the current secondary market for them will also agree with that sentiment. Now, "homage" watches are certainly a hot topic, and understandably so. Let's dive into that. It's no secret that a large portion of the watch market is flooded with crappy clones, direct fakes, or shameless copies of popular modern or vintage classics - but this truly feels like something different. Original? No, probably not. Faithful to the original design? Yes, absolutely. Does it scratch that itch of having an actual Paul Newman? Well, unless you have or can afford a genuine model, this is easily as good as it gets to the real thing. Gevril made these Tribecas (500 of them) as close to the original spec as possible, with a few differences: the lugs curve a little differently (a good improvement for a modern watch), and the bracelet isn't an Oyster - but it's still extremely comfortable, and still has big taper down to 14mm at the clasp. It's clean, the dial is both gorgeous and faithful to the original, the printing is clear and accurate, and the whole package does an incredible job of doing the original justice. They opted for an ETA 2824 + Dubois Depràz chronograph module, which is good enough for the likes of Omega, AP, and many other high-end Swiss kings. Gevril made just 500 of these - this one being #24, possibly significant for a Daytona-themed watch. These have quickly become a sought-after collector's item, and for good reason....it's a really, really good little watch.
