As I nearly wrap up my collection sell-off, I’m letting go of a watch I spent a long time searching for and have loved wearing, my limited edition, coveted Seiko SLA017 reissue of the legendary 62MAS, Seiko’s first dive watch. Just 2,000 pieces were released in 2017. The watch features a 39.9mm case, one of the most beautiful dials I’ve ever seen, a high-end 8L35 movement that keeps unbelievably accurate time, a box-shaped sapphire crystal, and 200 meters of water resistance. Mechanically, this SLA017 is perfect. The bezel action is incredibly satisfying, and the crown is smooth as can be for both winding and screwing in. The glass is pristine. The lume is glorious. There are a couple of small marks on the bezel. The highly polished case sides have quite a lot of very light surface scratching that is hardly visible on the wrist but worth noting—this piece has been worn and enjoyed, and it’s not a museum piece. There are also light scratches on the caseback. Everything would come out with a polishing, if you’re so inclined.
