The Seiko 62MAS family starts with Japan’s first diver’s watch in 1965, but its name now reaches across vintage originals, close recreations, and modern reinterpretations. What connects them is a remarkably clear design: a rotating dive bezel, rectangular hour markers, straight lugs, and a crown at three without protective shoulders.

The original 6217 watches paired a roughly 37mm case with 150-metre water resistance and a date at three. Their restrained proportions remain the reference point, though later Seikos take different routes back to them. The 2017 SLA017 follows the original closely in appearance, while enlarging the case to 39.9mm and using the automatic 8L35; its 200-metre rating brings the specification into modern diving territory.

The broader reinterpretation branch includes the 2020 SPB143, with a 40.5mm case, automatic 6R35, and a more contemporary treatment of the hands and dial. The 2024 generation, represented by SPB453, trims the diameter to 40mm, adopts the 6R55, and raises water resistance to 300 metres. Its small date window moves between four and five, restoring an uninterrupted luminous marker at three—a useful visual clue when separating these generations.
