The Seiko 62MAS was Seiko’s first dive watch, introduced in 1965, and its restraint still feels refreshing: a gray dial, broad luminous markers, and straight lugs without the bulk of later Seiko divers. At 37mm, it gives you the purposeful look of an early diving instrument in a case that wears easily beyond the beach.
The distinction to know is between the early 6217-8000, with its smaller crown, and the larger-crown 6217-8001. The former rewards an interest in the earliest execution; the latter gives your fingers more purchase, though neither has a screw-down crown. Both use the automatic 6217 caliber.
Originality deserves particular attention here. Replacement dials, hands, and bezel inserts can make an old 62MAS look unusually fresh, so examine their printing and shapes against documented originals. The dolphin case-back engraving can also wear faint. Treat the original 150m rating as historical context, not permission to swim with a sixty-year-old watch.
