Diastar

The Rado Diastar’s broad, shield-like surround and comparatively small dial give it a silhouette you can recognize across a crowded watch box. But the name covers decades of development, from early automatic watches to quartz versions and modern reinterpretations, rather than one fixed size or specification.

Introduced in 1962, the Diastar made scratch resistance a central part of its design, pairing a tungsten-carbide hardmetal exterior with sapphire crystal. That unusually durable surround also explains its proportions: the polished case becomes as much of the visual story as the dial. Earlier examples often combine compact dimensions, applied markers and date or day-date displays; dial furniture, calendar layouts and case proportions vary across the generations.

The separately named Diastar Original carries that design forward, though older and newer Originals are not mechanically or materially identical. The 2022 redesign introduced a Ceramos case surround and the automatic R764, with an 80-hour power reserve. Alongside those newer watches, quartz Diastars offer another branch of the family—familiar shapes, but a different movement beneath the dial.
