Piaget’s story begins at the workbench, with a movement-making workshop established in La Côte-aux-Fées, Switzerland, in 1874. Long before its name appeared on dials, the firm supplied movements to other watchmakers. That movement-first outlook helps explain the pleasure of a Piaget: slender proportions backed by serious mechanical ambition.

The hand-wound 9P, introduced in 1957, measured just 2 mm thick; the automatic 12P followed in 1960, using a micro-rotor to achieve a thickness of 2.3 mm. These calibers gave designers room to experiment with stone dials and richly textured gold. The Altiplano carries that thin-watch tradition into cleaner, more restrained territory.

Then there’s the Polo, launched in 1979: originally a gold watch whose horizontal gadroons flowed across case, dial, and bracelet. Today’s Polo takes a different approach, setting a cushion-shaped dial inside a round case. Alongside those sportier designs, Piaget’s hard-stone dials and worked-gold bracelets offer another thread to follow, where watchmaking meets the jeweler’s bench.
